Smoking and Pregnancy

  • If you are trying to conceive then going smoke-free can improve your fertility
  • When you smoke, over 4000 chemicals go into your body. Carbon monoxide in the smoke can reduce the oxygen reaching your baby.
  • For every cigarette you smoke - the blood flow to your baby is disrupted for 15 seconds.
  • Smoking increases complications during pregnancy and labour
  • Smoking increases the risk of miscarriage, sickness, premature birth and stillbirth.
  • Health risks for your baby include lower birth weight, slower growth, higher chance of cot death and asthma/breathing difficulties.
  • Stopping at ANY stage of your pregnancy will be good for your baby.

Secondhand Smoke

Breathing in secondhand smoke (passive smoking) has many risks for non-smokers. Children are particularly affected because their bodies are still developing. So if you're not ready to quit we suggest you try to keep your home as smoke-free as possible, to minimise the health risks for your family. Try to limit smoking to one room of the house or only smoke outside.

As virtually all enclosed public places in England will be smoke-free.  This means it will be against the law to smoke inside pubs, cafes, restaurants and shopping centres. So there's never been a better time to quit!
